This quarter in writing we are focusing on research based pieces. We are learning how to gather information about a topic and make our own all about book from our findings. As this is a newer concept for the children, we are currently working on a whole class research book to increase our knowledge of taking notes and paraphrasing the ideas in our own words. As we look ahead to our next writing piece, the children will have the opportunity to chose an animal of interest that they would like to research and create an all about book about. With limited amounts of hard copy resources at school, we are in need of your help at home.
What we need from you at home?
1. Take a few minutes at home to discuss with your child a generic animal they are interested in researching. (ie: instead of emperor penguins, have your child select penguins)
2. Log onto Big Universe and browse the animal book selection. Begin to save books to your child’s bookshelf. (These will be extremely helpful when we begin the research at school).
How do I log into Big Universe and save books to my bookshelf?
Go to the website: https://www.biguniverse.com/signin
Log in - username: wcp(lunch#) password: (lunch#) group username: wcpss
Click on Library tab at the top
Click on Animals/Birds/Insects Icon or specifically type in your animal name in
the search bar at the top right
Browse the animals books, until you pick an animal with at least 2-3 books.
To save the books to your bookshelf, click on the book. Before you open it to
read, there is an blue icon at the top that says save to bookshelf if you hover
over it. Click this icon and a message will pop up saying it successfully saved to
3. Once your child has chosen a generic animal record the name on the line below.
4. Lastly, spend some time reading the books saved on your child’s bookshelf. You can view your bookshelf by clicking the my bookshelf tab at the top of your Big Universe Home page. While your viewing your books, have your child begin to identify the animal group your animal belongs to, diet, habitat, where the animals lives on a map, and several fun facts that they may want to add to their book.
Thank you in advance for your support with this upcoming writing piece. As a heads up, we are asking that if you have approved your child to bring a device from home, they can bring them in everyday from January 17th—January 27th.
